ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Begins Land Acquisition for Integrated Steel Mill in Andhra Pradesh
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Private Limited (AM/NS India), a joint venture between Nippon Steel (40%) and ArcelorMittal (60%), has announced the acquisition of land for the construction of an integrated steel plant in Rajayyapeta, Anakapalli district, in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh state. This development marks a significant step in the company’s efforts to expand its steel production capacity to meet the growing demand in the Indian market.
Reports indicate that the planned steel mill will be built on a sprawling 890 hectares (2,200 acres) of land, with the first phase of construction set to produce 7.3 million tons per annum (MTPA). The project will eventually scale up to a total capacity of 17.8 MTPA across its first and second phases. The initial land acquisition is complete, and AM/NS India expects to take possession of the land by April 2025.
This ambitious project is set to benefit from strong support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The state has already allocated around 2,200 acres of land for the steel mill’s first phase and has committed to facilitating the construction process. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his enthusiasm, noting that the plant will not only create substantial employment opportunities but will also spur socio-economic development in the region.
According to AM/NS, the new steel mill will create approximately 100,000 jobs during its construction and operation phases, providing a significant boost to the local economy. In addition to the employment opportunities, the project will support the development of related industries and infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, further elevating the state’s role as an industrial hub in India.
Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, Lakshmi Mittal, expressed his pride in the project, highlighting its potential to bolster AM/NS India’s footprint in the Indian steel industry. He emphasized that the investment will help move India closer to its goal of becoming a global leader in manufacturing. AM/NS India’s CEO, Aditya Mittal, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the company’s commitment to contributing to India’s long-term steel manufacturing ambitions.
As AM/NS India progresses with the construction of this integrated steel plant, the project promises to be a key driver of growth for both the company and the Indian steel industry as a whole. By increasing production capacity and supporting the government’s vision of economic self-sufficiency, the plant is expected to contribute to India’s rise as a major global manufacturing powerhouse, creating lasting benefits for both the economy and society.
