PureCycle Technologies Inc., an advanced plastics recycler headquartered in Orlando, Florida, has announced a strategic collaboration with Germany-headquartered Landbell Group to strengthen polypropylene (PP) recycling efforts across Europe. Landbell Group, a leading environmental compliance and recycling solutions provider, operates over 40 producer responsibility organizations (PROs) globally. The companies emphasized that their partnership is expected to drive the upcycling of PP waste into high-purity, recycled polypropylene that meets the growing demand for sustainable materials in various industries.

Based on information from PureCycle’s official website, PureCycle Belgium will be leveraging its innovative dissolution recycling technology and the expertise gained from the company’s flagship facility in Ironton, Ohio, USA. This facility is anticipated to reach an annual capacity of 48,600 tonnes once it is fully operational. Through a unique purification process, PureCycle converts polypropylene plastic into a valuable, renewable resource. This process involves several stages, resulting in high-quality material that can directly replace virgin polypropylene (PP). Reports suggest that PureCycle’s PureFive™ recyclate is already in use for commercial purposes in the United States, and it has proven to be capable of being recycled multiple times.

It is reported that the collaboration between PureCycle Belgium and Landbell Group officially commenced in January 2024, with both companies working toward establishing advanced PP recycling infrastructure in Europe. In this partnership, Landbell Group will apply its expertise in the collection, sorting, and processing of plastics across multiple European countries. Landbell will provide polypropylene (PP) waste from its household collections to serve as the feedstock for PureCycle’s first European PP recycling facility in Antwerp, Belgium. This facility is expected to have an annual capacity of 59,000 tonnes once it is built and fully operational.

Wiebe Schipper, Vice President of European and Asia Pacific Operations at PureCycle, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, “Our collaboration with Landbell Group represents a significant step to advance plastic circularity in Europe. We’re proud to collaborate with another sustainably minded company that is committed to reducing plastic waste and creating a circular economy for plastics.”

Landbell Group’s Chief Operating Officer, Uwe Echteler, also commented on the initiative, noting that the combination of PureCycle’s purification technology and Landbell’s expertise in extended producer responsibility (EPR) will help manufacturers comply with evolving regulatory requirements. “By combining the innovative and robust approaches of PureCycle Technologies and Landbell Group in Europe, we will drive higher recycling rates and high-quality recycled PP, empowering producers to close the loop and to fulfill their new obligations from the PPWR.” Echteler stated.

The collaboration between PureCycle Technologies and Landbell Group underscores the growing momentum behind sustainable plastic recycling initiatives in Europe, with an increasing number of companies seeking scalable solutions to reduce plastic waste. As efforts to build a more circular economy gain traction, partnerships like this one are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the recycling industry.
