Alupro Partners with LARAC to Strengthen Aluminium Packaging Recycling in the UK

April 09, 2025

In an effort to improve kerbside recycling rates across the United Kingdom, Alupro (the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation) has announced a strategic partnership with the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC). This collaboration is a part of Alupros broader strategy to work more closely with local councils, providing support for waste management education and promoting positive behaviour change among local communities.

Founded in 1989, Alupro is the leading voice of the aluminium packaging recycling industry in the UK, with a mission to promote the recycling of aluminium packaging and drive a circular economy in the sector. Alupro works closely with local authorities, producers, and consumers to improve recycling rates and advocate for a 100% recyclable future for aluminium packaging across the country.

LARAC, established in 1983, is a membership-based organisation that represents local authority recycling officers. The committee plays a key role in helping councils develop and implement effective recycling strategies, offering guidance, support, and best practices to improve waste management and recycling outcomes across the UK.

According to the new agreement, Alupro and LARAC will collaborate to engage local authority members and share valuable best practices for recycling aluminium packaging. Alupro will also have the opportunity to present its latest consumer education programmes to local authorities through blogs, articles, advertorials, and banner advertisements on LARAC’s website. The aim is to further enhance the impact of local recycling efforts and help councils improve their kerbside collection rates.

Tom Giddings, Executive Director of Alupro, commented on the collaboration: “As part of our efforts to educate consumers and inspire an uplift in kerbside capture rates, we continue to work closely with local authorities across the UK to inspire positive behavioural change among constituents. Through our proven engagement initiatives, such as MetalMatters, which has been rolled out by hundreds of councils since its launch in 2013, we aim to make recycling simple, accessible and digestible for householders.”

Alupro’s MetalMatters programme, funded by producers of aluminium packaging, is one of the key initiatives that will be highlighted in this partnership. Since its inception, the programme has played a significant role in educating consumers about the importance of recycling aluminium packaging, making it simpler for them to participate in local recycling schemes.

Toni McNamara, Executive Director of LARAC, shared her enthusiasm about the partnership: “LARAC is delighted to partner with Alupro to support local authorities in increasing aluminium packaging recycling rates. Councils play a crucial role in driving household recycling behaviour and, by working together, we can help provide them with the resources, guidance, and proven engagement initiatives to make a real impact.”

According to Alupro and LARAC, the partnership is expected to help local authorities increase recycling rates and improve the quality of the materials collected from households. By working together, Alupro and LARAC aim to make recycling more effective and accessible for consumers, further promoting the sustainability of aluminium packaging through a circular economy model.

As part of their long-term commitment to sustainability, Alupro continues to push for a 100% recycling rate for aluminium packaging in the UK. The collaboration with LARAC is seen as a vital step towards achieving this ambitious goal, contributing to the broader UK recycling targets set by the government.

Looking forward, both Alupro and LARAC are committed to ensuring that local authorities have the necessary tools and support to drive further improvements in recycling rates. This partnership highlights the importance of collaboration in tackling the challenges of waste management and driving forward a more sustainable future for the UK.
