NWRA and SWANA Join Forces to Address Growing Lithium-Ion Battery Disposal Crisis

February 18, 2025

Lithium-ion EV Batteries

In a joint effort to combat the safety hazards linked to improper lithium-ion battery disposal, the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) have issued a joint policy statement. This initiative highlights a critical issue in the waste and recycling industry: the improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries, which pose significant risks such as fires that can cause harm to individuals, infrastructure, and the environment.

The organizations have emphasized that lithium-ion batteries should never be discarded in regular trash bins or curbside recycling containers. Due to their chemical composition, improper disposal of these batteries can cause them to overheat or spark, leading to fires in waste facilities. These incidents not only endanger the health and safety of waste management workers but also damage valuable recycling infrastructure.

In their statement, both NWRA and SWANA encourage the public to use designated battery take-back programs. These programs are designed to collect and recycle batteries in a safe manner, ensuring that hazardous materials are handled properly and that battery components are reused effectively.

Urgency and Advocacy for Change

Michael E. Hoffman, President and CEO of NWRA, expressed the critical nature of the issue, “Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries is a pressing safety and environmental concern. At NWRA, we are committed to raising awareness and supporting policy initiatives that promote effective take-back programs, ensuring these batteries are safely and responsibly disposed, with end-of-life certainty. Our partnerships with SWANA and others, aims to protect workers, communities, and the environment from the risks posed by these batteries.”

Amy Lestition Burke, Executive Director and CEO of SWANA, echoed these sentiments, “Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are one of the biggest issues facing our industry. Municipalities often bear the cost burden of collecting batteries and informing their residents of proper disposal methods for batteries. SWANA seeks to support its members with raising awareness of the fire hazards and to improve collection opportunities for batteries. This statement with our partners at NWRA provides a clear explanation of the issue. Our associations will use that statement as a baseline to elevate the issue and support our advocacy.”

Addressing the Challenges

The two organizations are focused on the unique challenges that lithium-ion batteries present for recycling and disposal. The batteries’ potential to cause fires makes it essential for municipalities to establish clear and safe collection methods. As part of their advocacy, NWRA and SWANA are pushing for improved recycling solutions and better education for consumers on safe battery disposal. Their efforts aim to mitigate the risks associated with improper disposal, which can lead to widespread infrastructure damage and harm to public health.

Both organizations have been pushing for better policies and initiatives to address the environmental impacts of improperly disposed batteries. As more electronic devices rely on lithium-ion batteries, the need for safe disposal solutions grows more critical. Without effective systems in place, the safety hazards from improper disposal are likely to escalate.

Looking Ahead

The collaboration between NWRA and SWANA represents a proactive approach to mitigating the risks posed by improper lithium-ion battery disposal. As part of this partnership, both organizations are committed to furthering public education efforts, working with municipalities to improve recycling infrastructure, and advocating for stronger policy measures.

These organizations are also calling on industry stakeholders, local governments, and the public to support economically viable and environmentally responsible battery recycling solutions. By working together, they hope to ensure a safer, more sustainable future for waste management systems and communities across North America.
